Last Supper
As we prepare to say goodbye to Belgium, we thought about what we wanted to do in Mons, our home for much of the last year, before we left. I had shopped all I wanted or needed, we had visited the big cathedral and Town Hall, we had consumed enough fries, beer and chocolate to make my pants not fit, and we had experienced the "other" worldliness that the DouDou had to offer. I was quickly looking forward to a closet full of lots of clothes choices (which would hopefully fit again soon) and communicating in a language I had command of. There was, however, one restaurant that so captured my heart that I deeply wanted to go back again before we left.
Le Salon des Lumieres - the Room of Lights. Everything about this fantastic restaurant enchants me. We first experienced it almost a year before, when we first arrived, for our 9th Anniversary dinner. I had found it tucked away behind the Grand Place and it had been such a romantic, gastronomical experience that I wanted to end as we had begun, on a high note.
Our reservation was earlier in the evening than last time, which gave me the opportunity to get a picture inside. Although it doesn't capture the essence of the atmosphere, it does give an idea of why I love it. All the luminaries were lit with real candles - a touch that is rare and magical.
Sadly, I didn't write down what we ate, but I love the presentation of the tables, the drink, the food, all of it. I don't know what the food is in the following pictures, but I can assure you that it was delicious and elegantly displayed.

I do remember this one, it is easy. Cappuccino and truffles, truly a match made in heaven. I am generally a very fast eater, but this was a meal well worth savoring each bite.
At the end of our evening, we had the opportunity to chat with our server, whom we discovered is also the owner (I believe it is a family business with mom cooking and perhaps a sister too?). He showed us some fantastic pictures of him and his family dressed up in 16th century clothes, getting into a horse drawn carriage. I don't know what the event was, but the clothing was of high quality and I was touched that he shared them with us. His name was Raphael, and although he didn't speak much English, and our French is choppy at BEST, it was enchanting. The evening was everything we had hoped it would be - delicious food, stimulating conversation, and a memory that would be treasured.

Au revoir sweet Mons. You have been good to us and we will remember you fondly.
